Like GJM, I have long regarded the Model 70 as the standard in hunting rifles, since he introduced me to the rifle 25 years ago. The action, trigger, 3-position safety, 5+1 capacity in standard calibers, the balance, all add up to a rifle that, IMO, stood alone as the finest hunting rifle available for 50 years. Even with advances in barrel and stock technology, the Model 70 action still served as the basis for outstanding custom rifles. This 1953 Model 70 .30-06 was rebuilt by Jim Brockman with a Lilja barrel and, even now, stands among the best bespoke rifles.

The 90° bolt lift on these actions preclude the use of optics with more recent wide ocular housing design, but scopes like the Leupold VX3 work very well.

Over the last decade, we’ve seen an explosion of affordable factory hunting rifles with all sorts of desirable features. It’s now possible to get a great rifle without spending big time & money. I’m still thrilled that my Barrett Fieldcraft weighs so little, can take a pounding and shoot so great.

I know, however, there are at least a few guys here who know the thrill of rooting around in the used rifle section of their LGS and scoring an old wood and blue steel beauty that still handles and shoots like a dream.
