Ankle carry works for lithe and flexible individuals without knee or back issues. It is wholly impractical for someone matching the description of the OP's dad.

Permanent truck guns, as opposed to bag guns that go in and out with people, are stolen / crime guns waiting to happen. Not to mention the odds of the OP's dad sprinting to his truck and retrieving a gun in time to have any practical effect are infinitesimally low.

I cannot stress enough the need to avoid the ankle holster. Even a Kel-Tec P3AT in a Galco Ankle Light (one of the most comfortable setups I have found) will aggravate the osteoarthritis in my knees. At that size and weight, I assume he has knee problems.

    These are all great suggestions.

I would also say you parents sound like perfect candidates for revolvers like a J frame, LCR or SP101 etc rather than autos.

Pocket Carry with J-frame revolver sounds most feasible option IMHO. Likely low risk lifestyle and comfort will make him more inclined to actually carry. Here are my preferred holster options.

Good reasonably priced options that works with / without laster grips:

More expensive leather option laser grip specific (occasionally they will have a sale with significant discounts):

This looks like a decent option for overalls.

I have one of the Desantis Smartcarry like things I think works well under my bibs. I have one that I rigged up a cheaper kydex J-frame holster into, but I have used it with my P-40 and want to get a second one for that reason.

I am a smaller person, but I think there might even be options that could hold the M&P. Might be best to have some kind of holster (your dad also might be the kinda guy that might think Condition 3 is ok...) and an IWB something with DCC clips would probably clip into a Smartcarry.

A clip-on holster without a terrible clip into a Smart Carry can work quite well.
    Think for yourself. Question authority.

Maybe something like a Sticky Holster tucked inside the overalls?

I carry a J-frame in Aholster all the time and your dad could too. My other idea would be a belly band under his shirt. If he wears button shirts he can leave a couple open under the bib.

I edc a gen 1 M&P compact usually in a crossbreed holster. But I have several cargo shorts that I can carry it in the normal pocket in one of several pocket holsters. The pockets in overalls are usually fairly generous so I suspect that would work well for your Dad. One thing to watch for is the shape of the bottom pocket. The ones with a wide flat bottom tend to let the holster lay over so the gun ends up laying in there crosswise. They need a holster w/ a wide flat bottom like this.
