Council Tool is just down the coast from me. I ended up getting the Hudson Bay Camp Axe with 24 in handle for the use case you described. I have been very happy with the $80 I spent. I was able to sharpen it up to a cardboard shaving edge!

Council Tools is doing some nice stuff.

I am waiting in a 6lb Forcible Entry Axe. Plan to put it on a 25 inch West Coast Saw Handle.

based on the pics and description & specs, I think the 24in you got and the 18in I want are the same head on different length handles.

Having the two in-hand that I ordered, I think I'd like the 24in but it becomes a storage issue.

What I'd really love is the Council Tool WC20PA19C Wood-Craft Pack Axe, 19-Inch but I'm having a hard time justifying the $140 price tag for an axe I'll use to chop my way out of the grocery store parking lot 2x/year.

We think alike; I wanted the Wood Craft axe as well but couldn’t justify it for splitting kindling to make campfires 5X/ year.

Zoro.com has a handful of Council Tool items. Probably not what you want. Some of the prices are out to lunch above MSRP. Some are actually decent after their 20% discount. Set up an account, put an item in your cart, and wait a few days. They'll send you a coupon for 20% off everything. Free shipping over $50. I order from them quite often.

I just picked up a new engineer's hammer for $11 and change after the discount.

And don't delete those emails if you don't need something right away. The coupons often work after the stated expiration. Zoro is great!

So now that I have three axes sitting here...
The 1.5 lbs straight handle is probably the one I'm keeping.

The 2lbs on the curved handle is kinda weird. The handle is very thin for such a heavy and bulk head while the straight handle model feels great in the hand and the slightly longer handle feels like it'll offset the power of the heavier head while also remaining nore controllable.

AND the more expensive model appears to have the same curve handle so I think I cured myself of that too.

Always between two major rivers that begin with the letter "M."
I got one of the "new" 2 lb Hudson Bay axes with the 24" curved handle when they first came out. In retrospect, I believe the 1.625 lb Flying Fox Woodsman hatchet with the 22" straight handle would have been the better choice for all-around casual use... especially for an old guy.

Not to say the 2 lb HB was a bad choice, because it wasn't. The Flying Fox just hits a sweeter spot for me in everything but handle length.
