Extreme newbie question: recommendations on cleaning supplies?

I recommend liberty gun lubricants for cleaning and lubrication. They used to be a forum sponsor, not sure if that’s the case anymore. For supplies, a boresnake, rod and patches, and an old tooth brush is all you really need.

I keep things pretty simple. Bore snake, paper towels, Q tips, and some CLP to clean, and Slip 2k to lube.

The general rule of thumb that a well lubed gun but dirty gun will run far better than a un-lubed but clean gun.

Yes, a dirty and wet gun will run. A dirty and dry gun will not.

Also, I prefer white shop rags instead of red shop rags. You can find big bags of them in the paint section at Home Depot under their generic HDX label.

I've been using M-Pro lubricant for a few years now. Recently, I've had problems with it just totally burning off and leaving me with a dry gun. Even a Glock run dry and hard doesn't like it. I've opened the bottle and re-lubed during a training session more than once.

So now, instead of oil, I'm running grease on the rails and I can't seem to burn it off.

This is what I did for many years with duty weapons. I never had any issues at all.

Lately, I use WeaponShield oil and a tiny bit of WS grease and Hoppes 9. I've used a good many of the gun oils on the market and never saw much difference as far as raw performance on the ranges.

I agree with the others that keeping it simple is best.

I do buy my own, but am a brake cleaner/bore snake/literally any type of lube kinda guy.

Uncle Pat, working for an OGA literally had endless ammo, time and supplies. More than he and his guys could use annually. He used motor oil, suntan oil, cooking oil, and butter(!) to lube his rifles. It All Worked! where and when it is placed is more important than what is placed.

Keep it simple:

1. Wipe the crud away with baby wipes & a q-tip or two
2. Put Hoppe’s solvent down the barrel with a patch, then a couple dry ones
3. Add a few drops of oil
