Got out of the habit of using them when I realized that holding the follower pin down with my thumb while holding the mag in the same hand is easy enough and quite a bit faster.

I have a Turtlecreek plate loader for each of my Ruger MkII and my Beretta M87BB. They're simple and work well - it's a piece of plastic with a magazine cross section hole in it with a protrusion in the hole that grabs the magazine follower's screw.Originally Posted by Glenn E. Meyer

The McFadden unit needs to be cleaned due to excess bullet lube and can deform bullets. As such, plinking only.
