    Is this (good looking) junk?

My son's birthday is coming up and I want to get him a couple of knives. Just a regular ol' pocket knife, something a bit more outdoorsy/bushcrafty, and maybe something a little flashy. I know the sheath is less then optimal for this, but is the knife itself junk?

Don't do it, BBI. When do you need them by and what have you got in mind? Modern folder, slipjoint, give me an idea of what you are looking for.

PM me if you want. Maybe I can hook you up, gratis, if I can find appropriate stuff.

I figured it was mostly a display piece and that the odds of it being real damascus were zero. Just wasn't sure if it was complete junk or not. I'll PM you.

Talking to one person I know who makes knives, there are predone damascus blanks that one can buy and use. I expect this is one of those, and those in my mind would be fine, if your going to make the knife yourself for him.

    not a knife

if your definition of a knife is, a hardenable piece of steel fabricated into a cutting tool, this ain't it.

Poshland was importing decoractive pieces from Pakistan, current place of origin unknown.

some might have been heat treated, most don't seem to be

blades are normally 2 piece, blade welded to handle

as far as good looking, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, close inspection they are crap to me

whatever edge you can get on it will rust off shortly

but some folks might like it.....

Right now there are good deals on Boker Arbolito knives on EBay. Dunno if it meets your definition of "flashy" but I thought the stag handles and the pattern on the sheath made it kinda Dunedain Rangery looking. I bought one as a prop for some book promo photos and I'm going to wind up keeping it rather than flipping it back on Ebay. The edge geometry wasn't perfect, but I fixed it with a stone while streaming videos.

Condor makes stuff like the Primitive Sequoia which has a tribal pattern etched on the blade. I received one as a gift, and actually use it quite a bit as a "bigger than a knife, not quite a machete" kind of thing. Their Blue River and Huron knives looks cool. If you poke around on their site you'll find other stuff with different adornments. Their stuff isn't the quality of Randall, but they seem to make functional tools that also can look cool. They are popular with folks in our scouting group.
I was into 10mm Auto before it sold out and went mainstream, but these days I'm here for the revolver and epidemiology information.

My sons first knife was a two or three blade whittler and a book on how to whittle. Dont get a carbon steel one.

Since you mentioned pocket knife and flashy, here are some suggestions that are a bit more pricey, but are both flashy and quite servicable.

The pocketknife portion of the search has been taken care of...and I believe BBI has decided on a fixed blade to satisfy the requirement of sturdy outdoor companion.
