I did something similar after I finally hung up my instructor ball cap when resigning my post-retirement reserve gig. I decided top see what happened after going from shooting several times each month, to only shooting maybe once or twice a year for a couple years. It was odd, but the moment I stepped onto the range (my former agency range), it felt like no time had passed since I'd last been on the range.
My last (recent) qual session was for both retired ID card renewal and LEOSA, and it didn't feel any different. Like I was simply returning to the range without any time having passed. Maybe that's because I'd served as an instructor for 26+ years, taking full advantage of trying to burn up the ammo inventory at every opportunity. I'd like to shoot just often enough to keep the rust & dust from forming too quickly in my golden years. At that qual session one of the new (to me) firearm instructors, who was observing my shooting, told me that the people at the agency would all like to be able to shoot that well ... and that's while already using their issued RDS-equipped 9's (instead of the .40's, .45's, and limited number 9's, of my time several years ago). Nice of him to say to an old retired dinosaur.
I've got to figure out how to find a source for LEOSA quals (and outside ID renewal quals) after we make our next move out-of-state, hopefully next year. Sure, getting a CCW is reportedly very easy, but I'd like to keep the retired ID quals current ('mailed' in to my former agency for renewed cards) and have LEOSA availability continued.
