Thread: Dan Wesson PM-9 flared magwell recommendations?

Dan Wesson PM-9 flared magwell recommendations?

What is a proven (manufacturer and part number, description) flared magwell that will fit and function well on a Dan Wesson PM -9? Also is it retained by the grip panels, mainspring housing pin or both? I am assuming here that you would retain the factory back-strap grip checkering. Is that a bad assumption? Thanks

There are one-piece and two-piece magwells to choose from. The advantage of the two-piece is retaining your factory mainspring housing, but they can have a little play. The advantage of the one-piece is no play, but sometimes (though not always) fitting of the mainspring housing portion is required.

In either approach, there's usually a small lip where the funnel portion of the magwell meets the frame at magazine insertion point; not enough to impede function, but on a custom fitted one the contact points are usually blended.

All of these outfits make excellent magwells; look at their offerings and see what best suits your needs:

    Wilson Combat
    Smith & Alexander
    Stan Chen
    EGW
    Nighthawk

Stan Chen magwell's are being used on the current Valors.

I think the PM-9 uses thin grips...if so, a normal magwell won’t match up with the grips. S&A makes one for thin grips, as does Dan Wesson. Not sure who else.

Possible, but looking at pictures they appear to be traditional cocobolo double-diamonds, in which case the thickness should be standard.

Just checked, the PM-9 uses standard grips, unless they changed them for the updated 2020 model.

I appreciate all the feedback. I don’t own a 1911. Am considering getting one and it will be in 9mm if I do. The PM 9 looks to be a classic. Will all the Covid induced manufacturing shutdown, I can’t seem to find one in a LGS to examine in person. I also like the Specialist as well. The current thread on “Berettas and 1911s” is an appealing topic. I love my 92A1 and considering another platform. The 1911 seems like a natural addition. I don’t buy a lot of guns. I would like to get something I would not mind owning a long time. I have always been intrigued by the 1911 with its history and longevity. The only one I’ve ever shot was a great first impression regarding feel, trigger and accuracy. It was a Remington R1 stainless. It was in 45 ACP but I shot it great and it seemed to to almost point itself. I doubt I will buy many so I am considering spending the extra $$ and getting a DW vs another less expensive model. From what I read here on this forum many of you guys like the Dan Wesson value proposition.

I have had DW (Valor), Springfield Armory, and Colts. All have been amazingly reliable in both.45 and 9mm. I currently have a Smith and Alexander one piece on my Valor and a Wilson Combat on my Colt. I would love to have them blended but am still happy with the functionality as factory designed.
(ETA). The SA is held on as per the factory mainspring housing/ pin and the WC is the cheap one that hooks over the grip bushings.

Techwell grips / TGO magwell if you want to do any USPSA...zero modifications to the pistol and super fast reloads.

    That TGO magwell looks nice.
