Yeah, don't mean to derail, but I have a hard time refraining from dark humor (and kind of picking on) with many of the good folks whom I like here; Baldanders being amongst that number.

I misread the link that Glenn posted. I thought the officers were resigning because the city wouldn't defend them. I understand now that it's the union.

So now they don't have the support of their employer, nor do they have the support of their union. They pay dues to the union for legal support. At least that's what happened where I worked. There is no right-to-work law in MN so unions can demand dues from the employees. If it's like WA they just deduct your dues as a condition of employment. I can see where non support for legal issues could cause some bigger problems with attracting or keeping qualified people.

Something is really F'd up here with the union. Sounds like they might be in bed with city politicians. Kickbacks maybe?

A movie version would probably cause riots.

It's been 25 years since I read that one. Probably due for a re-read.

    A few things here:
The union has stated they wouldn’t fund the criminal defense of members, from two specific units, jammed up during the course of these “peaceful demonstrations”. The PBA is still protecting all members in terms of departmental discipline.
The PBA has stated this is to protect the financial well being of the union, based on the notion that there would be additional malicious prosecutions.
I would speculate that there some additional reasons that the PBA pulled their support for criminal defense for these units.
The union is very much not in bed with either the brass or city hall.
