And then there’s this “signature series” that is clearly listed as an 85 (“UTX-85 II”) but is shorter and lighter still than the other two?

Microtech UTX-85 II T/E Signature Series Tanto OTF Knife Black (3" Two-Tone)

That top one is way off. These were eyeballed with a ruler:
    7 1/2" OAL
4 7/16" handle (including glass breaker)
    3 3/16" blade

of the exact same model? I pulled those dimensions from the Blade HQ listing. A similar model on a different vendor's page has similar dimensions to what Blade HQ has.

I think the issue is taht this appears to be a separate model, not technically a "UTX-85". I see various abbreviations on the UTX-85-ish models like "S/E" and "T/E" and "D/E" that I'm not clear on meaning.

With Virginia changing their knife laws, this thread could cost me.

Those are blade shape designations (single edge, tanto edge, double edge). I don't know about the special runs but the production model 85s should use the same handles unless Microtech is one of those companies that succeeds in spite of themselves. Mine is a regular single edge drop point so I can't speak to the other blade lengths.

OTF knives are awesome. They take what used to be a simple device and make it
    -Expensive
    -Complicated
    -Require regular cleaning and lubrication
-Frightening to civilized humans for no good reason
-Impossible for most females to operate

The last two alone make them worth owning.

Except for the Deadlock which quietly goes “snick”.

    Out The Front (OTF) knives

Two new OTF purchases, very inexpensive. @LittleLebowski, note how respectful I am being to your wallet in this post. It's only going to cost you about $20.

    Outdoor Edge SlideWinder $11
    Screwpop Ron's Utility Knife 3.0 $10

Outdoor Edge is ergonomic and easy to grip. The pocket clip seems like overkill, and I'll probably remove it. It's well-made and seems like it will hold up to hard use. However, I predict that it will require occasional disassembly for cleaning out gunk from the mechanism.

Screwpop Ron's Utility Knife is a simple and elegant design. A locking bar engages the blade notches, and a rare earth magnet holds the blade in place until you move it with your thumb. I will be adding Dragongrip decals to one side of the knife. I'm going to buy these (with serrated blades; see below) as holiday gifts for countless people. Highly recommended.

Both knives accept serrated blades, greatly enhancing their utility.

Turns out that (a) the utx-70 is so small that I don’t know that I need or want to replace it anymore and (b) definitely don’t want a silver screw, so it’s kinda not a big deal, but I shoulda read the listing here more closely as these things clearly have no chance of fitting this tiny thing.
