Out The Front (OTF) knives

That's a decent number of cycles. My OTFs get an average of no more than 1 cycle per day, so hopefully I'll be ok for a while.

Thanks for testing the failure mode for us. Your observations confirm what I suspected after looking over the mechanical design: mainspring failure will still allow the knife to be used as a gravity blade because the locking gates are independent from the mainspring. I think that makes it a good serious use knife--better than some folders that won't lock open if the locking bar spring breaks.

Of course, fixed blades FTW in general.

You know - if I had to guess I’d say maybe over 20,000 fires? I’m a fidgety person and I’ve carried it everywhere just about daily for three years.

It is nice it turns into basically a locking / unlocking gravity knife. I will say I just didn’t want it to slide open in my pocket and was leaving for the beach for a week. I just went back to work today and had left it on my desk.

Every thing I am seeing about the Kershaw Livewire males me think it may be a better choice than the Microtech.
I have one in the cart and still deciding yes or no.

I have decided that I could not tolerate the blade play that is inherent in the OTF.
I ain't getting one.
Someone else will have to be the Guinea pig.

Open it up, disassemble it, clean it, verify all parts are in working order, reassemble?

The locking gate may have crud in it. Put the knife in 'neutral' so the blade can be moved by hand. Spray a lot of RemOil into the hole, and let it drip back out the front. Blast with canned or compressed air. If a few reps of that procedure that don't fix it, you may need to send it back to Microtech or buy a tool and look inside. See this post.

Precisely what I'm trying to avoid, lacking the tool to remove the screws and any desire to void the warranty.
