I just ordered this Native 5 in Cruwear with some Christmas money.
Edge of my lane at best. Thank you in advance.
Presumption 1: VG-10 comes forearm shaving sharp out of the box
Presumption 2: VG-10 is easy to maintain forearm shaving sharp with a Sharpmaker (“Sharpkeeper”)
Presumption 3: VG-10 has significant stainless/no rust qualities when exposed to water and other liquids.
Question: Is there a steel that comes as sharp out of the box and is as easy to keep sharp that has any meaningful advantage over VG-10?
I am not your attorney. I am not giving legal advice. Any and all opinions expressed are personal and my own and are not those of any employer-past, present or future.
I know nearly nothing about steels, but my Native 5 with S30V was sharper out of the box than my VG10 Delica. I haven't sharpened either of them, so I don't know which is easier to sharpen or how long they hold an edge.
Edit to add: for my light use, and because I don't know what I don't know, what steel the knife has, hasn't made much difference to me. Other features of the knife have a bigger impact on my likes/dislikes rather than the steel.
I agree with #2 somewhat. It is easy to maintain a sharp enough edge...even though I don't use a Sharpmaker. From my personal experience and for my daily use needs Spyderco's VG10 works fine.
As to #1, I would say "most of the time". I recieved a VG10 Street Beat a few years back that was not sharp out of the box and needed work. I was actually surprised by it.
Shaman arrived today. Initial impressions are good.
I will say that the PM 3 is a handy knife to use. Very good “clip to the workout pants/shorts” sort of tool.
I dig it.
The Native 5 came today and I am impressed.
I have several Spydercos and they are all very well made and finished.
This Native is at near custom level.
Construction, fit, and finish are outstanding.
Excellent grind and edge.
Very pleased with this knife.
It will replace my Sage 1 as EDC.
