A jet suit for paramedics which would see patients reached in minutes by a "flying" medic has been tested by the Great North Air Ambulance Service.
After a year of talks between GNAAS and Gravity Industries, a first test flight was carried out in the Lake District.
Andy Mawson, director of operations at GNAAS, came up with the idea and described seeing it as "awesome".
He said it meant a paramedic could "fly" to a fell top in 90 seconds rather than taking 30 minutes on foot.

.... So far, however, no fungi have grown from the sample taken out of the mummified Twinkie. "It may be that we don't have any living spores despite this wonderful, rare event that we've witnessed," Lovett says. "Spores certainly die, and depending on the fungus, they can die very quickly."

Revolutionary CRISPR-based genome editing system treatment destroys cancer cells

"Researchers at Tel Aviv University (TAU) have demonstrated that the CRISPR/Cas9 system is very effective in treating metastatic cancers, a significant step on the way to finding a cure for cancer. The researchers developed a novel lipid nanoparticle-based delivery system that specifically targets cancer cells and destroys them by genetic manipulation. The system, called CRISPR-LNPs, carries a genetic messenger (messenger RNA), which encodes for the CRISPR enzyme Cas9 that acts as molecular scissors that cut the cells' DNA."

Life's building blocks can form in interstellar clouds without stellar fusion

"New research suggests one of life's most important building blocks, a simple amino acid called glycine, can form inside interstellar clouds well before the emergence of stars and planets."

"Until now, scientists thought significant amounts of energy were required for the formation of glycine and other amino acids -- the kind of energy produced by stars.
However, new experiments -- detailed Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy -- suggest "dark chemistry" reactions can produce glycine on the surface of icy dust grains without the assistance of stellar energy."

"In the laboratory we were able to simulate the conditions in dark interstellar clouds where cold dust particles are covered by thin layers of ice and subsequently processed by impacting atoms causing precursor species to fragment and reactive intermediates to recombine," said Ioppolo, a researcher at Queen Mary University of London.
The experiments first revealed the formation of methylamine, a glycine precursor. After repeated tests and the assistance of precise, atomic beam-powered diagnostic technologies, researchers were able to also detect the production of glycine."

"In the end, this enriched organic molecular inventory is included in celestial bodies, like comets, and delivered to young planets, as happened to our Earth and many other planets," Ioppolo said.

Bad news for astronomers — the radio telescope at Arecibo is being dismantled.

The world-renowned radio telescope at the Arecibo Observatory in northern Puerto Rico, now on the brink of collapse, is set to be withdrawn from service, the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced today.

Scientists solve key mystery of the human immune response

"For the first time, scientists have observed the technique that dendritic cells use to inform T-cells about the threat of disease."

"Dendritic cells are a type of immune cell responsible for presenting evidence of an invading pathogen to T-cells, which perform a variety of immune-related functions, including the recruitment of other types of infection-fighting antibodies.
When a cell is infected, its proteins are transformed to signify the problem. For the body to deliver an immune response, dendritic cells must show the altered proteins to T-cells."

SCIENTISTS HAVE TAUGHT SPINACH TO SEND EMAILS AND IT COULD WARN US ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE

"Through nanotechnology, engineers at MIT in the US have transformed spinach into sensors capable of detecting explosive materials. These plants are then able to wirelessly relay this information back to the scientists.

When the spinach roots detect the presence of nitroaromatics in groundwater, a compound often found in explosives like landmines, the carbon nanotubes within the plant leaves emit a signal. This signal is then read by an infrared camera, sending an email alert to the scientists."

Everything we know about antidepressants is wrong?

    https://blogs.sciencemag.org/pipelin...s-work-at-last

Judging the hypothesis here is beyond me, but I understand some of the implications if it is true.

My quick take: the mechanism of action of many "standard" antidepressants is not serotonin modulation, but interaction with another receptor site which is also the mechanism by which ketamine exerts an antidepressant effect.

But I'm just an English major.
