Looks like Virgil and the kids got makeovers while I wasn't looking.

But I understand these types of stereotypes but wonder if companies change images to maintain sales. The female Native American image never stimulated my scrutiny even when buying the product. When teaching, I showed the older images of Jemima, Ben, and a couple of others to students. My inner city kids had never thought about the subject and showed only mild interest and soon began arguing about McDonald pancakes vs other vendors.
I don't think many folks view Aunt Jemimah, Uncle Ben, and Chef White (Cream of Wheat) as anything but iconic symbols of products they like. Hardworking, knowledgeable folks who use the products they are hawking, so know what's good.

Offensiveness is somewhat in the eye of the beholder, for instance, I find these ads offensive:

Sigh. Cute little trick aside, anyone that got offended by the old Land o' Lakes butter box just wanted to get offended and will find something else to get mad about now the box has changed. Caving to lunatics infuriates me and I have not bought any of their butter since my wife told me about the change. Store brand or local tastes just fine.

Aw, that is bittersweet. The original Virgil's ad was based on a Maxfield Parrish painting for Jell-o.
