Revolver Crossdraw Carry For Driving Use: Bianchi UM8R Versus Galco Switchback

Guys, I'm considering utilizing a crossdraw while driving, as I'm kind of the COVID 19 Designated Sherpa/Driver for my wife (as it should be...).

Revolvers concerned are service/duty-sized 4" Ruger GP100 and/or Security Six.

I read some good reviews of the new Galco Switchback, but looking at my UM84R, due to its design, if I remove the flap and metal belt attachment, it seems I pretty much have the same thing, as it also integrally incorporates belt loops on both sides.

The UM84R I already have on hand, pretty much languishing in a drawer; the Galco I can get for about $50 in two weeks or so if I order directly from Galco (they have some nice incentivizations going on, such as free shipping). The Galco might be slightly more concealable, but probably not much. The UM84R is probably a bit more bulky, but also a bit more durable. The Galco utilizes a retention strap, using the UM84R as I'm thinking, there would be no retention device/strap (which isn't necessarily a bad thing for the role I'm envisioning).

Any thoughts/experiences with either, particularly as utilized for crossdraw?

Either would work, but the retention strap for the Galco concerns me. If you can route it so that the hammer spur does NOT go through that slot, then I think that it might work.

That's my thought as well; it looks like it's removable, IAW the ambidextrous design. Having to undo a retention strap quickly in an already cramped by definition workspace concerns me too.

I'll do the blindingly obvious thing first-reconfigure the UM84R, and seeing how it works. If it does acceptably, mission accomplished with no additional funds expended; if not, the Galco'll be Plan B.

UM84R With Flap Removed Configured For Ambi Belt Carry

Here's the image of my Bianchi UM84R with the flap and metal belt clip hanger hardware removed, used as a cross-draw driving holster with my 4" GP100. Fit is decent, and concealability will necessitate a looser-fitting vest or jacket.

Image was taken from a mirror; the holster is on my left side, butt facing forward. Speedloaders will be carried on my strong (right) side, between 2 and 3 o'clock. Back up Speed strip in upside down Galco pouch will be carried either at 11 or 1 o'clock position; probably at 1 o'clock.

I would look into a shoulder holster before I did crossdraw like that. Carry like you have in the pics just presents a "take my gun" that I feel that it almost brought me my demise. That is almost exactly like I was carrying when I had my experience. detailed here post #24, https://pistol-forum.com/showthread....-Bueller/page3

If I absolutely had to do crossdraw because I was in the seat all the time I would look into something like the Car Jacker from Andrews, http://www.andrewsleather.com/traditional.htm

I just wanted to say that even today I get sweaty palms and a flutter in my chest when writing about my tussle.

Story appreciated, but again this is specifically for when I'm driving; in the event I step out of the vehicle, the vest (a slightly longer-length excellent Propper Icon softshell) is appropriately zippered; one of the many nice things about the Propper vest is that there's a dual/two-way zipper.

I do have a good shoulder holster for my Beretta 92D, and several tanker-style holsters that I can draw upon when situationally needed, depending upon the platform.

    Been looking too

My Hk P2000 needs a home in a cross draw holster........so I've been looking. I really like the Wright Leatherworks Regulator holster. Lots of firearm options. Still looking though.
