    Reloading Data on VV 3N38

Not a lot out there on this powder besides 9mm Major and .38 Super.

VV lists two loads in .357 Magnum. Anyone try loading it in .38 Special? It appears that density and energy content in 3n38 is very similar to 3n37 with 3n38 being a bit slower burning. I'm looking at VV's load data for 3n37 in .38 Special and it looks like under a 160-grain LFN 5.3 grain start, 6.2 grain max.

Seems like ~5-grain start working up to 6.2 max would be plenty safe. Gun is a 4" GP100.

I know it isn't an ideal powder for loading .38 Special, but unfortunately, pickings are slim right now. I've got a backorder in for N320, but you know that's probably months away for delivery.

    Might be useful:

If there is a USPSA club nearby - I would try to trade it to an Open shooter for a more traditional 38 Special powder. I have some VV3N37 and VVN350 on the shelf from a long time ago when I shot Major in 9x21 and 38 Super - I never tried to use them for non gamer major loads. Good luck!

I've got an order in now for some N330. VV has several loads in .38 Special for N330 listed and a bunch for 9mm and .45 ACP. They'll be a little hotter than the n320 loads, but on the low side, should give my wadcutters out of a snub at ~700fps, which should make a fine snubby practice load.

I'll set the 3N38 aside for .357 Mag, 9mm +P carbine loads, and 7.62x25 Tok. I inherited a Tok from my dad. Looks like VV manual says 90-grain Sierra JHC over ~7.5gr of 3N38 should give me ~1375 give or take a bit. That should be sufficient for jack rabbits, an annoying squirrel, or zombie gophers.
