Super cool old .38, bit of a mystery. Check this out.

I picked up the above .38 special for a buddy. It is a 5 screw. The serial # is 6272XX.

But I have never seen a rear sight like that..

Any insight on this thing. It has a front sight that looks like an inverted v. It is a solid shooter.

Is this rear sight a factory setup? Custom?

The gun looks like pics of a 1905 M&P.

    Comments from the Pros?

Bottom line, like I told my buddy, it is a dang nice gun. Shoots great. It goes well with Auto-5s, lever actions, wool shirts, and leather holsters.

I found this, but that is not over specific, years wise:

    Manufacture Year by Serial Number
    "K" Frame Revolvers - 1899 to 1983:
    (Years/Serial Number Range)

    Pre-War Years:
    1899-1902...........1-20,975
    1902-1903...........20,976-33,803
    1903-1905...........33,804-62,449
    1905-1906...........62,450-73,250
    1906-1908...........73,251-120,000
    1908-1909...........120,001-146,899
    1909-1915...........146,900-241,703
    1915-1942...........241,704-1,000,000

The sights make it easy to shoot well.

Think it may be an M&P Target. Will do some looking..

Whatever it is, I love it.

One like that shows up every once in a while on the S&W board. I think it is a gunsmith modification for a better sight picture without the extortionate price of $17.50 for a King adjustable.

Yep -- M&P, a pre-Model 10. Long action. No "S" prefix in the serial, so no hammer block, FYI.

That sight set-up is great, but not factory. Superb looking work, though. You can bet it was regulated by the 'smith, front sight shaved a little at a time, for a specific load. Should be fun finding out which.

Definitely looks like a gunsmith install sight, very King-like.
