Many years ago I went to a demonstration by a member of the US boomerang team. https://usba.org/us-team/ It was impressive -- he demonstrated all the different events, and spent a good part of the afternoon teaching us to throw. Very cool. It took some practice, but I got to the point where I could consistently make throws that would return to be easily caught.
It's how you play isolation catch.
