Thread: Groceries and Self-Isolation

  1. #41
I've been going to the grocery store around 9pm or so. Store closes at 10 so there are fewer people. Wegmans has been doing a good job. There are disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer by the carts and there is a person with a backpack tank of disinfectant spray hosing down the carts on a regular basis.

Question for our medical folks, would it behoove me to wear a surgical mask regardless? Or are they pointless? I only have a couple N95s so I'd rather not waste those

These delivery services, what carriers do they use? My weekly dog food shipment has been delayed and cancelled and resent by the shipping company, not the shipper, more times than I can count. If using the big 3 to ship, USPS, UPS and Fedex, I would have to think these would be delayed also.

I just got a bag of food for my dog delivered by FedEx this morning, FES. (TOTW / High Prairie). If you can't get any, I can share some. I have a backorder on amazon until the middle to late part of April for another 28 lb bag.

I ordered this from Chewy. (I have a standing order for a bag every 9 weeks. It was delayed by several days, but nothing crazy.)
There's nothing civil about this war.

I was just using the dog food delivery as an example of being delayed and was asking if the people food shippers would be using the same carriers. If more people started to rely on this for food they would need to expect delays.

I'm good on dog food. We got ahead when all of this started and even if the weekly shipment gets delayed for a while and we run out of stock, the Danes can eat what's on the shelf at Tractor Supply. They aren't that picky.

Did this last week and agree that it seems like a pretty good strategy although the "paper isle" looked like a preview of socialism. My wife has been doing the curb side delivery thing as she has the newer vehicle with the automatic hatch (SUV version of "the Transporter") and the nifty shopping app on her phone. However, our store has stopped doing substitutions and I noticed on my snatch and grab mission that some of the items that we didn't receive were due to guessing wrong such as they had plenty of 18 count eggs but no 12 count. We are right on the I-80 corridor just inside the PA/NJ border and got wiped out by NY and NJ ex-patriots heading for the hills.

We've been using Moink since December for most of our meat. We liked the subscription service and it made meal planning stupid-simple. Unfortunately, due to sky-high demand, they're limiting their options significantly and it made it virtually impossible to get what we wanted. We will probably return to Moink when this madness wraps itself up, but in the meantime, we checked out other options.

Porter Road, Butcher Box, and Crowd Cow are all either sold out or on wait list. Crowd Cow is another service we'll look at seriously when things return to normal, but I went ahead and got on the waiting list because why not.

In the mean time, we ended up giving Omaha Steaks a try. It's not a subscription service, but they seem to have a lot in stock. Shipment won't be here for a while, but hopefully it'll be worth the experiment when it does.

Anyone else using (used?) a meat-subscription service?

Have you considered buying a whole (or share of) an entire cow? If you have the space and chest freezer to buy in bulk, it may be worth looking into. The prices should be a better due to not needing to pay for shipping, though you'd need to pick up yourself. Upside is you know where the cows are coming from and how they're raised, and you are also supporting someone local. Other than needing the space/freezer, the biggest downside versus a subscription box is you're maybe going to get cuts you don't normally purchase.

Please don't take this comment the wrong way since I basically ignored your question, but I think it's a viable option if the pros/cons work out for your family.

As of a week ago the farmers markets were still happening around here. A number of ranches have booths and i think you can also place an order ahead of time for pickup. We havent had great luck with curbside grocery orders and beef, so i think we'll try this route.

One warning about getting beef by the quarter or half cow. We looked into this a few years ago and decided to try a few different cuts from the ranch first. We didn't like the taste of any of them. Turns out we didn't like the taste of grass fed beef, from that ranch at least. Very glad we sampled first.

I had no idea this was a thing. Finding a rancher around here that offered this kind of service would be ideal.

Same experience here with Chewy. Pretty happy with their service.
