Marine pilot who ‘borrowed’ a helicopter dies of cancer

Apparently some guy was ambushing police officers and first responders, so this Marine pilot took off in a CH-46 with an all-volunteer crew, picked up a load of NOPD officers with long guns, and flew into position where he could illuminate the shooter so the folks on his bird and on the ground could get good hits.

Police began firing at him, where he fell dead after having been shot over 200 times reportedly.

I'll pour one out for this guy tonight.

I didn't know the man, but he was mentioned in the Pensacola News Journal last week when he passed away.

I got to meet him at MCAS Iwakuni when I was on active duty. He was a absolutely outstanding general officer, and a heck of a Marine.

We were sent there to do some security training with the guard force, and he wandered over to watch. He joined us on a run and called cadence for about a half-mile.

    Much respect.
