    Colt 1911 Slide/Barrel Lug Question

I found a possible issue in my used Colt .45 Government. Unfortunately, I did not notice this before I bought the pistol. It was probably built about three years ago and looks like it hasn’t been fired much.

The barrel lug recess in the slide does not have square edges. There is an angle that goes to the full depth of the recess on over half of the slide. There is very little area left where the barrel actually locks into the slide. The pistol shoots great.

    I appreciate any advice.

Glad it still shoots well but I wouldn't put another round through that gun.

The timing on your pistol looks all buggered.

Not a gunsmith or even an armorer, but the barrel is probably not unlocking from the slide soon enough and the upper lugs are crashing into to the barrel when the bottom barrel lug hits the vertical impact surface...which is why a lot of your slide lug recesses are rounded off and a big chunk is missing from the rearmost. The barrel will probably snap a link or crack off the lower lugs next.

I'm guessing the slide is smoked.

I'd send the gun to Colt or a skilled gunsmith pronto before something else breaks.

My recently purchased Combat Elite Commander in .45 looks similar. Locks up fine.

Thanks, but that’s just my poor photography. Nothing is broken, missing, or worn in. The part that looks broken is actually just the forward recess in the ejection port. The beveled areas I’m wondering about, like the one the pointer is pointing to, were machined there.

I guess Colt machines it that way now. All of my older slides have sharp 90 degree angles where the recesses are cut into the slide.

Lmao my bad. This is why I'm not an armorer lol.

The spot you highlighted looks okay.

What specific model of Colt and how old is it ?

Rounded lug cuts like this is a known issue on older colts from the early 1980s, around the time of the transition from series 70 to series 80.

There were also instances of this later in the 80s when corporate and replacement workers during the strike by their union/UW workforce.

Does it have a finger bushing?

    2017 Series 80 .45 Colt Competition Model.

The bevels are deep and long. The barrel can only lock into about 1/4 of the total lug area.
