Get this: as of today, every person in contact with patients or visitors, system-wide mandatory surg masks and face shields.

Yet, mandatory backup cameras (and yes, children being backed over wasn't the only reason). Take a look at a 1950's vehicle and a 2020 vehicle and it's readily apparent that much of what we just assume is "part of a car" was mandated safety equipment. Hell, you didn't use to have to have a rear view mirror, turn signals, etc. let alone multiple airbags, a backup camera, seat belts, head rests, etc. How much does all that add to the cost of private transportation? Why?

The analogy is a good one, just perhaps not to the point you make if you zoom out from just "mass transit vs private auto ownership" and understand that the infrastructure in this country doesn't really lend itself to lack of private auto ownership outside of very few major metropolitan areas.
Good point, but it also shows how we can make tweaks to mitigate the risks while maintaining the larger freedom rather than have my government say "You need to shut down your store now. We only want truly essential businesses like pornography production and marijuana distribution to remain open."

They are not just going to throw a vaccine out there without appropriate testing.

We also already have enough trouble with people and vaccinations as it is. Imagine how the no-vac's will react .

Also, to borrow a phrase we often use around here:

Every needle has a lawyer attached to it.

What is your system's PPE reserve like?

Possible second vaccine, or is that the one already being tested?

    UPMC unveils potential COVID-19 vaccine

“We had previous experience on SARS-CoV in 2003 and MERS-CoV in 2014. These two viruses, which are closely related to SARS-CoV-2, teach us that a particular protein, called a spike protein, is important for inducing immunity against the virus. We knew exactly where to fight this new virus,”

I don't understand what this means and I hope our experts will chime in.

    Reasons to be hopeful?

They say surgical masks are non-issue. N95s are limited but not critical. Don't know about the shields and googles. PAPRs available but prioritized to EDs, ICUs and necessary aerosol - producing procedures, in that order.
