Yeah, it sure is CHUNKY!! I did not realize the Aegis buckle was so thick, the Ares marketing makes it seem more low profile than the Cobra buckles. Honestly I see little advantage over the Cobra for this buckle.

It's great if you have to tuck and match your shoes. If you can wear a cover garment I prefer the standard webbed version

I run the buckle with a little thinner belt. Works great and wears thinner that it looks in the pic. Wears thinner than a cobra buckle for sure.

I bought one because I liked the idea of a leather belt (which is my without a doubt my preference) that had infinite adjustment within its size range. The workmanship and materials both looked great. However, the belt was so thick it would not fit through the loops on many of my holsters or mag carriers. Having worn leather 'gun' belts for 20+ years now the heavier weight hides used in the two layers for the belt seems unnecessary to me.
I have the “Shooters Belt,” so I can’t talk about the thickness of the Aegis adjustable buckle. However, I agree with you about the belt leather itself being super thick. Mine won’t fit through any of my holster loops or slots except one. The belt itself is very well made and looks like it’ll last forever, though.
