“It doesn’t matter what the problem is, the solution is always for us to give the government more money and power, while we eat less meat.”

We had a 6 y/o autistic child who had been missing for 30 minutes prior to the call. Officers weren't close and I was first at the scene. I was able to determine the child was non-verbal, had an affinity for water, was not dressed for the cold, and put out a description. After searching the house with a family member personally, I set up Incident Command and started the world. Missing Persons, drones, extra officers from off district, fire search & rescue, etc. I had the family gathering clothing for scent items for the bloodhounds and then personally searched a nearby retention pond. I found a small "Thomas the Train" ball in the water and my heart was in my throat as I asked an officer with the mother if the child had such a toy. The "no" answer was welcome. Shortly afterward, one of my officers located the child about 1/4 mile from the residence unharmed. After medics checked for hypothermia, etc. the child was released to the mother.
The family has been provided with the information to enroll in Project Lifesaver, officers in the area will save the child's picture, and hopefully we never have a repeat but if we do we're better prepared. I typed up two commendations for officers' actions during the event.
The family is an Asian refugee family. A few years back I had this exact scenario with a different refugee family not terribly far from this one and ended up tracking with the bloodhound. That child was dead in a nearby retention pond. This run was so similar it brought that unsuccessful search immediately to my mind and I got to relive that day as well. I am incredibly grateful that this incident had a happier ending. There is, honest to God, no better day then helping save a child. There is, honest to God, no worse day than failing to. At the moment I'm tied up in both memories.

Saw this too late for a prayer of need, but always in time for a prayer of thanks. Thankful for the sake of all involved, including you BBI.
