I bought a 3” Python first and I really like it but when the 2.5 barrel came out I discovered I preferred the balance and feel of the 2.5”.
I really wish Colt made the 2.5” Python available with a round butt. I have emailed a grip maker about having rounded and extended service style grips made ala similar to the pre 74 short frame detective specials. I paid for the grips to be made but the maker was injured and I was refunded my money.
Another surprising discovery to me with the Colt pythons was that the service grips feel good without a grip adapter.

    The trials continue
Here's what's mounted on them. The 3" has a set of Ropers from GunGrip.com, and the 2.5 has the Badgers. I spent time sanding down the finger grooves. Badgers give me the best recoil control. My next Badger purchase will be a set of fingerless boot grips. I also have Deer Hollow service and 1960's style grips and Eagle boot grips. The Eagles were on my first post about the 2.5 and are the shortest grips, they end right at the butt. Let me know if you want pics of Deer Hollows or Eagles.

They started messing with those rib slots when they came out with the Blued Pythons. See the 4.25" blued Python has 3 slots instead of the traditional 2.

Maybe not traditional, but not "ick". I mean, I (unintentionally) laid eyes on one of these today...

Empire Cottonmouth (I believe the one I saw was the 4.25")

I could understand this gun much more if the light switch could be operated without getting close to the barrel/cylinder gap.

I respectfully disagree with the "not ick" characterization. That's world-class ick.

Oh, it absolutely is! I was attempting to point out there are ickier things than 3 slots on a 4.25" Python barrel. The attempt was clear in my head but in rereading my post I can see where I muddled it up. Whoops!

I ordered a set of cocobolo Hogues a few months back but when they came in they didn’t fit properly. Hogue did an exchange, the new ones came yesterday and fit fine - plus they have much nicer grain than my first set.

Finally Sorted Out Python Holsters and Grips

After a lot of experimenting with grips, I think I found the ideal setup for me (YMMV). Badger Custom Grips for the win.

The 2.5" Python is wearing Black and White Ebony grips. They came from Badger as full-sized with a speedloader cut and palm swells removed. I found they were too long to conceal, so Badger cut them down to their boot grip option that extends past the butt (see Post #1321). They were GTG concealment-wise, but I didn't like the finger grooves. I removed the finger grooves to create the best-fitting grips I've ever owned. The remaining groove locks my index finger, causing upward pressure that results in near-perfect alignment of the bore axis and my forearm. My grip remains locked no matter how many rounds are fired in a string. I included a close-up of that grip for reference. Taking what I learned from the first Badger set, I just got a set of their fingerless boot grips in Gabon Ebony for my 3" Python. One minor note: the bottom front of the grip might need sanding to match the other set. I need to decide if the way the bottom curves out works for me. Otherwise, the fit and finish are superb. I put 100 rounds of High Desert .357 through the gun today. I think the grips helped with accuracy.

The holsters are both by Kramer. I've been using the black one to carry either Python AIWB. The brand new one is Kramer's IWB Sheepskin-lined holster. It is very comfortable, and although it has slight forward cant, it works for AIWB carrying the 3" Python.

As for the Pythons, every time I'm on the verge of impulse buying another revolver, they look at me and ask why. They've saved me a few K. The round count for the 2.5" is 5K rounds, and the 3" is 2K. Both have been problem-free and feel like they're brand new. As mentioned in other posts, I changed the sights on both. The 2.5 has D&L fixed rear and night front sights. It is POA/POI with High Desert 158 grain offerings and does almost as well with Speer Lawman .38 +P 158 grain TMJ rounds. The 3" has a Wilson adjustable rear paired with their gold bead front. POA/POI is set for High Desert, but it's only a click or two away from being ready for wadcutters.

I forgot to mention that if I could only have one, it would be the 2.5" Python.

That is a gun from the Church of the High Fudd.
