    Week 350: 2 in 2 Walkback

    Week 350: 2 in 2 Walkback

Results may be posted until January 13th, 2020.

    Designed by: Gabe White
    Range: Varies
Target: USPSA lower A-zone or IDPA -0 zone
Start position: Holstered (see alternative below)
    Rounds fired: Varies

This is a variation of a classic walkback drill.

Begin with the target at 3 yards and the timer set to a 2 second par time. You can start with your hands at sides, hands at surrender, or hands at high torso. At the start signal, draw and fire two shots to the A/-0 zone in under the par time. If successful, increase the distance by two yards and repeat. You get two mulligans for the whole drill. If you miss either shot or go over the par time, try again and that uses up one of your mulligans. At any point in the drill, if you fail but have no mulligans left, the drill is over.

Alternatively, if your range does not allow drawing from the holster, you can start in ready position of your choice and still use the two second par time, but your target zone will be the ~6x6" head box of the USPSA or IDPA target.

If you need to make some minor adjustment to the drill in order to participate, that's fine, just note what you did when you report your results (for example, your range won't let you shoot at 3 yards so you started at 7 yards, or you needed to substitute another target, etc.)

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Start position (hands at sides, opportunity, high torso, or gun in hand at ready position)
Gun, holster, and concealment (optional) used
    Target used
Number of mulligans used, and when
Furthest distance where you were successful

Training with firearms is an inherently dangerous activity. Be sure to follow all safety protocols when using firearms or practicing these drills. These drills are provided for information purposes only. Use at your own risk.

Made three attempts at this one. I fall apart pretty quick.

Attempt 1 - max successful range 5 yards
Mulligan 1 @ 3 yards, dropped shot on first attempt
Mulligan 2 @ 7 yards. Dropped shot, over time

Attempt 2 - max 5 yards, spaced out to keep going after the second mulligan
    3 yds - 1.71
    5 yds - 1.90 - miss
    5 yds - 1.85 - miss

    Attempt 3 - max successful 5 yds
    3 yds - 1.76
    5 yds - 1.84 - miss
    5 yds - 1.89
    7 yds - 2.06 - over time
    7 yds - 2.02 - over time, miss

Observations. When I don’t have to battle 15 layers of winter clothes, I’ve got a solid 1.5 second draw to first shot. The second shot is the one that kicks my butt.

Target is of the last two attempts.

    Staring position:
    Hands in front pants pockets.

    Equipment:
    S&W 340PD J frame
    Galco horsehide pocket holster
Fiocchi .38 Special 148 gr. wadcutters

    Target:
8" diameter steel plate (IDPA -0 equivalent)

    Details:
Shot it "cold" with my new 340PD J frame. Starting position was both hands in my front pockets, revolver fully holstered and fully seated in the pocket, master grip acquired.
I had to modify the starting distance due to shooting steel.

    Results:
    8 yards - 1.69 seconds, 2 hits
    10 yards - 1.99 seconds, 2 hits
    12 yards - 1.82 seconds, 1 hit
    12 yards - 1.91 seconds, 2 hits
    14 yards - 2.02 seconds, 2 hits
    14 yards - 1.89 seconds, 2 hits
    16 yards - 1.94 seconds, 2 hits
    18 yards - 1.86 seconds, 1 hit

Furthest successful attempt - 16 yards.

Shot on turning targets - set at 2.2 seconds, which seems to be about the right grace period vs. a shot timer.

    3 yards was easy
5 yards - mulligan #1, then a false start (only one round in the gun), then made it
7 yards - barely made it
7 yards - forgot to move to 9, overtime. Misread the drill and didn’t take my second mulligan, so I called it done.

Good one, need to try again on a day when my brain is in gear.

    Start position: Hands at sides.
LTT 92 Compact, JMCK WC2.5, closed front Dickies short sleeve work shirt.
    Target: USPSA, paper.
One mulligan used at three yards, one at five yards.
    Furthest distance five yards.

Cold start on Friday, January 10th 2020, previous live fire Friday, January 3rd, no dry practice during interim.

Three yards: One alpha one charlie, both over par (mulligan used)
Three yards: Two alpha, 1.92 (1.69+0.23)

Five yards: One alpha one bravo, 1.82 (1.61+0.21) (mulligan used)
Five yards: Two alpha, first shot at 1.89, second over par. Improper support hand grip, too far forward on the frame.

Possibly my worst performance since late 2017. That said, my cold draws to first shot are usually 2.00-2.25 at seven yards.
