That was covered in the aforementioned book by Sides. Their force was largely destroyed. Some amazing (and harrowing) tales of survival by those who made it back across the frozen reservoir.
It weighed heavily on General Smith that he didn't have the resources to send to their aid when they reported they were under attack by the Chinese. Must have been gut wrenching to know what they were up against.
