We still have one. My daughter bought it in high school for thousands under what she could get a comparable vehicle with AWD and the same mileage. She drove the wheels off that thing and it still runs great at 175K (although I did put head gaskets in it at 150K). I called it the Birth Control Car as boys wouldn't come within 20' of that thing. We've had it for sale for $1000 for months and no takers even though its rust and dent free. Oh well, it serves a purpose as back up transportation for all of my family and all the employees at work.
The pussification of trucks over the last two decades is killing me. We work the shit out of our one ton+ trucks and the cost just keeps going up. I bought a new '19 Tradesman and it's pretty good, but we are already seeing the hassle of push button starts and no keys. It's the only flaw I am trying to deal with right now. Otherwise it's a good truck for doing truck things.
Musk should have built a standard shaped pickup out of whatever super-steel he built this one out of. Equipped it with decent heated mirrors, all wheel electric drive and minimum 400 mile range. 8' bed, 4K payload, really good headlights, and a minimum bumper tow capability of 14K. Put heavy duty bumpers front and rear.
The latest in vaporware from Musk.
How's that semi truck coming?
I'm not a huge fan of wagons or SUVs because I like "out of sight out of mind" luggage space. I don't need someone breaking my windows to see what's in my suitcases or gun cases. I want an actual trunk or a covered bed. The Towncar/Crown Vic had a ginormous trunk. I like my issued Charger, but I miss the trunk from the old CVPI. Even "big" cars don't have that kind of space any longer. Honestly I haven't looked at Mercedes because the odds of me laying out Mercedes cash on a Mercedes and then paying Mercedes upkeep on a Mercedes are nil.
Sorta around sometimes for some of your shitty mod needs.
400 miles on battery and payload aren’t happening (not to mention pushing it awfully close to that pesky 26,001 thing). I think the real ticket would be slapping a huge alternator on front of the engine (like Mercedes), and rigging that up to batteries and electric motors to assist with acceleration. Similar concept to what “hybrid” semi trucks do.
I can remember driving real 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. Rock hard suspensions, no power steering, 1st gear was a useless crawler gear and 2nd was way too tall, 100 lb clutch pedal, actual payload was 3/4 or 1 ton, short wheel bases, front end lift if you couldn't get the load in front of the axle, 0-55 eventually, constant maintenance, etc. In performance new trucks blow the old ones out of the water. Technology has pushed the 1/2 ton class into one ton territory with a much better ride. Especially with gas trucks, change the oil, and occasional set of tires and brakes and they are relatively problems free. Bed wall and ride height show that trucks aren't designed for workers, though. Can't access the bed from the sides, need a built in ladder to climb in, can't back up to a trailer without a camera.
Whether you think you can or you can't, you're probably right.
Bed wall height is my biggest complaint on new trucks. I own a 19 Ram 3500 and an 06 Silverado. If I could buy the 06 all over again I’d sell the Ram tomorrow.. even if the Silverado is down 25% on hp and torque. It’s just so worn out now I had to get something new.
