Opinios on NY Safe Act Compliant ARs

Well, I moved to Erie County for family reasons. Got a nice little house more in the country than our San Antonio house (which was country-ish) but now is total burbs and traffic. The move was for personal family reasons, so that is immune for gun world critiques. The area is nice, we used to live here. Met some good gun folks.

In any case, I ditched my standard AR. I brought a shotgun, Ruger 9mm carbine, 10/22 - all compliant with 10 round mags for the latter two. I bought a Mini-14 (stainless, black stock with a neat scope). But I feel the AR itch. The options are a standard looking AR but with a fixed magazine (yuk) or a 10 round removable one - lhttps://ddsranch.com/smith-wesson-m-p-15-sport-ii-5-56mm-223-rem-new-york-state-safe-act-legal-featureless-ar-15-type-rifle/

Doesn't look attractive but my question is does it work? I'm klutz with the Mini-14, esp. seating a mag - need more practice.

So is the latter weird AR any good. Does it run?

Thanks for the input. Yes, I will take editorial comment on how could you do this while I eat a beef on weck.

I would probably thibk about assembling a lower and add an upper of my preference rather than be stuck with whatever ‘featureless’ rifle was available.

This is not an endorsement, but simply to point out that a very quick online search turned up this:

When I lived in NYS, I went the fixed mag route. An MR2 magazine lock was installed, so splitting the upper allowed dropping the mag. I found the various compliant stocks to be unusable for me.

An idea just occurred to me....

Would this qualify as SAFE compliant?

VA is possibly staring down the barrel of similar restrictions. However, that stock is NOT compliant with the currently published "wish list" of restrictions as it would be a "thumbhole" stock.

Not living in NYS, I have not tried that particular M&P variant, but I have experience with the M&P Sport II. The one my wife has is a pretty good rifle for the price.

The problem with Chancellor Cuomo's NYS SAFE Act ( https://safeact.ny.gov ) is that the act itself is pretty much what it is, but is quite open for interpretation... The NYSP and the NYAG legal people are very reluctant to put down in writing what is and what is not compliant. It's very much on a case by case basis, unless the item (rifle) or features (militaristic) are very VERY clear cut.
As a result, my advice is to go with a rifle manufacturer that either will deal with shipping to NY (as their legal people would not allow it if they thought there was a hint of non-compliance...) https://blackrainordnance.com/state-compliance/ or go with a company that manufactures here in the State of Cuomo (such as https://www.dark-storm.com/new-york/ ) These are only a couple of quick examples...

YMMV, but on a good day in NY nothing bad will happen to good citizen, but on a bad day in NY, something bad will happen to good citizen.. Remember, violations of the SAFE Act provisions are generally Class D Violent Felonies.

It is an “other firearm” that is neither a pistol, nor an assault weapon under the definitions in the NYS penal code.

    Try A Cure?

Well, if you can find a NYS-compliant 3rd-gen S&W pistol, train diligently, with the mantra “Don’t get caught with your dingus down.” You will develop cognitive dissonance with the AR15 safety being on semi-auto when its dingus is down. When the 3rd-gen S&W pistol’s manual-of-arms has become a conditioned reflex, you should be at least partially cured of wanting an AR15.

The above paragraph is based upon personal experience, though in my case, I had learned the S&W slide-mounted safety in the early Nineties, well before I had ever fired an AR15, which was not until 2002, when Houston PD started a patrol carbine program. Yes, the AR’s selector being pointed downward, to fire, caused considerable cognitive dissonance.

Having said that, in your shoes, I might opt for the SOLGW solution, as posted by HCM, to scratch the AR15 itch.

S&W makes a solid AR and even with 10 round detachable mags it’s a viable defensive option.

I’m pretty sure NY state is also part of the weird world of “others”—ARs that aren’t classified as either pistol or rifle (barrel longer than 9 inches, shorter than 16). They are more or less the SBRs that the rest of the free world goes crazy for. They can also be had with flash hiders and collapsible braces.

Troy and Stag are the only factory options that I’m aware of although local gunshops are assembling their own brands with a wide range of quality and price. They are selling like hot cakes in CT and NJ.
