I went through FLETC with a Puerto Rican police officer who had jumped ship. He told great stories about the 31" straight baton they all carried. He utterly scoffed at any of the expanding batons we were encouraged to carry.

A few years ago, I was in the Whole Foods in downtown Seattle and there was one of Seattle’s finest standing near customer service, smiling, head on a swivel, and with old hickory hanging off his belt. I walked past him and then back stepped to mention I don’t see many folks carrying around old hickory. He smiled a little bigger and told me something like “people chill out when the stick comes out.”

True except... The expandable from Peacekeeper are a different ball game. They are heavier but the extra weight is concentrated in the tip. When you do drills, there is a dramatic difference between a strike from an ASP or Monadnock and a Peacekeeper. Like the difference between .38 Special wadcutters and full-house .357 magnum.
