Condolences. I remember when my doberman died, in his sleep of heart failure. I'd seen it coming for about a year and I was honestly relieved when it happened, as it saved me from some hard choices.

That is altogether dreadful, and you did right by him.

Our previous dachs, Friedrich (1995-2010, rest his noble soul) would approve.

My dad made me throw my cat in the trash when he rolled over him in the driveway one summer. I never did get to bury him

I'm sorry for your pup, but you did the best, and right thing for him. RIP, little guy

That's absolutely terrible, but as everybody else has already said, you did it right.

That sucks, Duke. You did the only thing you could, and God bless you for it.

My condolences to you and your family for your loss. A pet, especially one with the history of yours can certainly become a true family member.

I used to repo cars for banks and this dog, an abandoned 11 week old puppy, came from one of my first successful visits. I gave the dog to my girlfriend at the time - now wife - and he was the first thing we had together. Despite a rocky path to where we are now... He was a reminder of how much time we had spent trying to be who we now are.
Your wife is going to need a whole lot of love and support. I imagine this will be very tough on her losing a pet with such emotional significance and she will try to blame herself for the dogs death. You cannot let her do that.
