My condolences to you and your family for your loss. A pet, especially one with the history of yours can certainly become a true family member.
Your wife is going to need a whole lot of love and support. I imagine this will be very tough on her losing a pet with such emotional significance and she will try to blame herself for the dogs death. You cannot let her do that.
