Sorry dude.
A canine handler of my acquaintence had his first working dog diagnosed with late stage, terminal cancer. The vet making the diagnosis offered to put the dog down then and there because he was obviously in pain. Grim had been retired a year or two by then. The handler decided that he and the dog had been through too much to let a stranger do the deed. So he hauled Grim out to a favorite mesa, dug a hole and used his duty piece to put Grim down....
He couldn't tell the story without tearing up, and alcohol made the retelling much, much worse.

June 3rd, I held my 16 year old dog's head in my hands as she breathed her last. Nothing grows as heavy as a lifeless dog. It was the second worse day of my life.
You handled the situation the best way possible.
I am truly sorry to hear about it. it's totally awful.
