62gr OTM or BTHP round for 14.5 w/MK6 CMRW

My 14.5 project gun is a Geissele URGI that will soon be wearing a Surefire RC2, a Leupold MK6 in a super precision mount and DBAL/light combo. My goal is to consolidate ammo into 4 different rounds tops:

    1. 56gr MEN 5.56
    2. 62gr M855
    3. 62gr OTM or BTHP ????????????? (still in selection phase)
    4. 77gr TMK Black Hills

I'm looking for a MK318 Mod 0 replacement, but I can push out to 500 ish....... barrier blind or partially barrier blind in close wouldn't be a bad thing. I can't find the MK318 anymore (I have 220 rounds still), the federal load has been rebranded/coded and I can't find it. They had it at GT distributors for $1 a round and it sold out. The winchester 62gr OTM from Sweden is good stuff.....but it's out of stock at the moment, that was my purchase schedule not meeting up with demand. I am interested in the Barnes 62gr black hills stuff, but it's more expensive than the damn 77gr stuff.......

SO! I'm wondering what I should do. I use the 77gr in my RECCE style rifles and 11.5's. I have the M855 for my M16A4 clone.....and because reasons (Also like 5K rounds on hand), the 56gr men is good for the same rifles zeroed for the 77gr TMK because of the overlap.......just hunting a 62gr that I can reliably stock for my 14.5's.

Edit: I'm also planning the cheap version of this exact build with a BCM 14.5, PA 1-6 FFP ACSS, RC2 and OWL. But I'm still planning to use the same 62gr ammo.

I shoot a lot of the BHA 62 TSX and 77 TMK, 5.56 variants, both are working rounds.
77 TMK is sub-MOA for a long ways. Superb open-air round, not a barrier round.
62 TSX is mostly a MOA+ load, usually 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 for a ways. Sometimes better, depends on the barrel. Superb barrier round.
They are often, but not always a good pairing for each other. Barrels vary. One gun shoots them very close, another less so. Know your dope. Know the role for each.

I think we have similar goals, but I’m wondering why you want to maintain such a wide variety of ammo. Here’s what I’ve come down to:

HD: Speed 75gr Gold Dot. Right now I only have like two mags worth of this stuff but it’s what’s currently loaded in my HD AR. Probably obvious why.
SHTF/Match: MK 262 clone. The idea here is that if I take a precision oriented course and/or competition, I have solid ammo on hand that won’t break the bank to stack in a fair quantity. It also doubles as the backup HD/SHTF round because it has acceptable terminal ballistics and strikes a happy medium between plinking 55gr shit and the Gold Dots. Barrier penetration limitation is accepted.
Range/training: Federal AE MSR. I wanted the same Win 62gr stuff because that could fulfill this role and the SHTF/Match at an even better price, but like you, wasn’t able to stock enough before SGA stopped stocking it. Major bummer. However, the MSR stuff is priced well normally and I bought a few cases while the rebate was still on. It also performed surprisingly well in my limited testing.

That is solid info thank you.

I really do want to keep it simple and I hate when there's chaos in my ammo cans. My wife has a huge range of stuff, few boxes of this, few of that. It drives me insane lol. I'm trying to optimize my ammo inventory by giving me options, but not going into a rainbow of silliness trying to make sure every rifle/SBR/pistol has a special load. I want to be able to grab a mag with a few color codes to tell me which ammo, and have application specific ammo that I can know holds/dope for.

I do understand the 4 ammo types is pushing that envelope. I am in love with the 77TMK's which regrettably do not have barrier capabilities but do beautiful things on target and at range. So they're not going anywhere, and no one is advocating for that either. I can't get rid of all the M855 my younger self stock piled. I can't shoot it at half the ranges either. So that's just for bad days through 20" barrels or if I run out of everything else. 56gr men has that beautiful overlap with the 77gr tmks so I can shoot that out of my precision setups when I'm just plinking with limited negatives.

I just need one of those super sexy rounds that's effective for my GTW setups that I plan to be able to do most things well with. It will also be the most prevalent round in my inventory save the 77gr TMK's which I'm hoping to buy a few cases of this tax season.

I just hate the $$$ of the 77gr so I know the BH 62gr TSX I will hate even more.....But not the performance obviously.

Ah ok, the 855 part makes sense now. What’s GTW though?

Uh....for long range, open air, the 77 gr TMK or MK262 OTM work well.

For barrier blind, the 75 gr Gold Dot is reasonable and not too costly.

For practice, whatever you can get that is inexpensive.

    Done.

    This reflects my use.

I load a MK262 clone for precision shooting and a 55 FMJ for cheap practice ammo. My defense mags are loaded with the 75 Gold Dot which is very accurate and a performer. I've tried the 77 TMK and did not get as good of accuracy but others really like it.

100% this. Why do you want this mythical 62gr OTM? Magtech 5.56 77 OTMs are $0.55 per round and do good work out to ~750 yards from a 16" barrel. 75gr Gold Dots have a very minor vertical POI shift in my rifle and cost about the same(and drop deer reliably). Wolf Gold is cheap, accurate enough, and stupid reliable.

    Do you reload?

I have gone from TTSX 55, GMX 55, to Nosler Etip 55 as my all around bullet. Very accurate. Nothing wrong with the former two, the Etip has been cheaper and very accurate. I suspect the other two are as good- I switched from a 1-4 to a 1-6 after switching to the Etip and it is easier to test accuracy with 6x than 4x...

Nosler 55 Ballistic Tip shoots to same point at 100 out of my 16” barrel. The Nosler bt has a fairly stout jacket for a varmint bullet- I would not be concerned with using that as my all around bullet. It is not barrier blind.......

The above comments are also good.
