    Hiking in Alaska this summer, about 75% of the time it was too windy to use bear spray. In Wyoming, last month it was 50/50 too windy. But practically everyone was carrying bear spray, and seemed unaware that it only (maybe) works if you can actually spray the bear.

    I was always told that if you are going to carry a .44 mag in bear country to file off the front sight. That way it hurts less when the bear shoves it up your rear end.
