Really easy to take a long gun away from some one. A lot easier when they have a second point of contact farther away from the end of the barrel.

    Costa FTW.

I used the magwell hold a long long time ago. Graduated to VFG, now moderately extended C clamp and it seems much more controllable.

For the average HD range it probably is just fine, but what is the benefit of a mag well grip over standard grip on the fore end?

Other than someone who has short arms or is in compromised shooting position why would you go out of your way to hold a rifle in a less optimal way?

Why teach someone a less optimal way to begin with?

I don't know hence the questions What specific advantage does a mag hold give you?

In my own experimenting, I was not able to keep my sight as steady with a mag hold over a traditional hold nor was I able to control recoil and make good follow up shots as quickly and accurately.

I’ve encountered very few people in life that if you make them hold a rifle with two hands for more than five minutes, that don’t end up at or just in front of the mag well. Them little rifles get heavy, most folks start choking their grip and getting tight after a couple minutes.

I won’t argue about what’s better on paper. Is “optimal” hand placement really optimal if it’s not what’s realistically going to happen on game day. Train one way on the range, do something different in the field.
Whether you think you can or you can't, you're probably right.
