    Week 337: VTAC Reload Drill

    Week 337: VTAC Reload Drill

Results may be posted until September 28th, 2015

    Designed by: Kyle Lamb
    Range: 10 yards
    Target: USPSA Metric lower A-zone
    Start Position: Holstered
    Rounds Fired: 9

Let’s revisit a short and sweet drill from Kyle Lamb at Viking Tactics!

Start loaded and holstered, with a USPSA Metric target 10 yards away. At the start signal, draw and fire three rounds to the lower A-zone, reload, fire three more rounds to the lower A-zone, reload, and fire three more rounds to the lower A-zone, for a total of nine rounds.

Here is Kyle Lamb’s video of the drill:

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Equipment used (pistol, holster, optional concealment garment if one was used)
    Time
Number of hits to the lower A-zone
    Anything you noticed

I ran this 3 ways as a small comparison of 3 reload types - speed reloads, slidelock reloads using strong hand thumb aka the preload technique, and a traditional slidelock reload using the support hand thumb . I ran each 3 times and will make a post per set of 3.

    SPEED RELOADS

    5" m&p 2.0
Jmck aiwb 2.5 from under a polo
Jmck pouch for reload 1 and kytex pouch for reload 2

    Total A hits for 3 runs - 23
    Average reload time - 2.21

    1. 8.10 -1c 1.46 draw 1.90 1st reload 2.16 2nd reload
    2. 8.54 -1c 1.52 draw 2.11 1st reload 2.58 2nd reload
    3. 8.52 -2c 1.51 draw 2.40 1st reload 2.12 2nd reload

Though they were technically "speed" reloads and were planned, they felt like a surprise and I had to tell myself to engage the reload program. Pretty slow for me historically but that is expected as my limited dry practice time lately has been devoted to draws and trigger control stuff and virtually no reloads.

This used to be my default reload method, assuming that the gun was setup to accommodate(glock with extended release worked great, p09 not so much). It started with the p30 and back then sub 2 slidelock reloads were normal. I was putting an inordinate amount of time into them(shooting L10 minor from concealment made it high priority - never did beat the other guy shooting L10) With the large back strap on the m&p, I get the best shooting performance but the controls are harder to reach. I'm ok giving up the preload for better performance shooting. I had to shift the gun pretty bad to preload and it totally through my grip off when remounting the gun a few times. Run 2 was simply a dumpster fire on all counts.

This is my current go to reload as I can't reliably reach the control on my m&p as setup without considerably shifting my grip. I defaulted to this when I quit putting effort into reloads and today showed that it was the most stable insofar as maintaining a solid shooting grip. It was a bit slower overall, due to missing the slide release on the 2nd run-1st reload and on the 3rd run-2nd reload. It isn't irrecoverable, as seen in the times and my shooting grip was maintained better than the preload method. Now, all that just pertains to my current setup. When running glocks with the extended release for instance, I can easily and reliably use the preload method and back then my times were comparable to speed reload times. My p09, the preload isn't an option as I can't reach the release but the support hand thumb has a large shelf of a release that is almost never missed because it is huge and a swipe of the thumb downward over it reliably drops the slide. When I ran them exclusively, I was getting a tenth or two above 2 seconds which I was happy with. With smaller releases like the m&p, i have to be a bit more deliberate and make sure I nail the release on the top of the shelf or I have to take a second swipe. I still prefer this from a strictly shooting perspective, especially since I am not putting much effort into maintaining them right now, as they keep my grip solid without shifting. YMMV.

    Three runs for me:

    7.21 clean
    6.85 - one C
    6.95 - clean

My shooting partner running the timer didn't note the reload times (doh), but, I was pretty satisfied with those numbers all around

    JMCK AIWB
    Blade-Tech single mag pouches

    Ran this 4 times:

    12.42 - 6 hits...shot cold, not cool!

13.53 - 9 hits, clean...was more "deliberate"! (Reminding myself once again, speed is fine, but accuracy is final)

    10.68 - 5 hits...tried to speed up-you can't miss fast enough!

12.62 - 8 hits...I see this as my best balanced run.

I have not been dry firing lately, and it shows. This is an awesome drill, and I will be shooting it alot more in the future.

Ran this from uspsa gear, cold. Was a dumpster fire for as far as the reloads go - both were at 2-2.2, ughh. I need to work in live fire reloads more. Least I got my hits

The stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me.

    Humbly improving with CZ's.
