Chattanooga police say person at center of UTC campus search was off-duty officer

People have been trained to panic first and seek details later.

As the great philosopher Pogo said “We have met the enemy and he is us.”

"After locating the person who made the original 911 call and confirming more firsthand information, Chattanooga police determined it was one of their own officers who was carrying his rifle from his vehicle to his house after his shift. He was in full uniform and was going home to sleep, Roddy said.
But in a twist, that same officer responded to the very SWAT call he sparked and was helping in the search. Police didn't say how he reacted when he learned he'd been searching for himself."
This is also a good example of the effects of the “ telephone game” and why initial reports are often wrong in such situations:

Word spread rapidly across social media and by phone calls and text messages, much of which was inaccurate. Police confirmed they'd received unsubstantiated reports of the suspect wearing a ski mask and tactical gear or having been seen in separate locations.

The original 911 caller did not mention a ski mask or tactical gear, police said. In fact, police said he told dispatchers that he thought it could have been a police officer but he couldn't be sure.

I’ve seen some real devolutions caused by intellectually retarded initial public calls for service. That can be a tough one for LE to mitigate.

"911 what is the nature of your emergency?"
    "there's a man with a rifle."
    "ok, where"
    "1 main street."
    "what does he look like?"
"he's a tall white male, clean shaven, wearing all black, black boots, and a big belt."
    "...ok...is he wearing a uniform?"
    "yes."
    "is it a police uniform?"
    "yes."
    "It's a police officer with a rifle?"
    "yes."
    "what's he doing?"
    "he's walking into a house."
    "does he live there?"
    "yes."
"ok we'll have someone be right out."
    "thanks."

*unit...please go to 1 main street and inform officer smith that he's got derpy neighbors."

    A) the officer is an idiot for not protecting his identity. Idiot neighbor calling is a sign that he’s not doing a good job of protecting himself and his home from someone that might want to hurt him.

    B) there’s a real supervisory failure to ensure timely investigation of the call.

    C) great job by the troops for taking the call seriously and taking care of business. False alarms are just opportunities to train
Whether you think you can or you can't, you're probably right.

Sounds like the time a relative/LEO was at the ballpark and noticed several officers moving closer, when he got up to assist, one behind him just about fell over, when he recognized him. They were moving in on him, because a person behind them, thought they looked like the wanted murder suspect that was on tv the night before.

Doesn't matter if it was a cop or not, though the "suspect" possibly being in uniform... the stupid is strong here.

What will it take for people to ask themselves, let alone Dispatch to ask, "Is what you are seeing threatening or illegal?"
"No, but they have a gun and so I'm scared!"
"What are they doing with it?"
    "Holding it."
    "How?"
"By their side, and, oh, walking from a car to a house."
"Thank you, we'll look into it."

For crying out loud, hoplophobia is more alive than ever before. We used to have calls like this in the 1980's and the result was, "It's not illegal for someone to have/be wearing a firearm, but thank you for calling." Despite the recent waves of high profile mass killers, thousands upon tens of thousands of firearms are handled on a daily basis without a crime involved. Why default to the least likely scenario? Because fear.

No aggressive behavior noted, no shots fired, no threats made - mind your own business. Oh, and don't abdicate your duty of self-defense to the State.

Recently had an employee refuse to do their job because "there was a gun present" when they went to visit a person. Couldn't have been too threatening as instead of leaving post haste, they lingered to take pictures.... of a pellet rifle. Again, any threats made, anyone acting in an aggressive manner? Nope, gun.

A nation this weak will not stand. Lord have mercy on our souls, we know not what we do.

I’ve had a police car parked in my driveway for the last 12 years. It’s a very normal thing throughout much of the country.

And that he needs to start using a rifle case.
