Rifle Case Question - aobut the padding

So I buy a big Peltor two long arm case. It comes with a dimpled pad and a flat one. Excuse my naivete, does one cut the thick flat one out to conform to the shape of the long guns. Just lying them between both, seems to not easily close. If you cut the material, what is the preferred edged implement?

Due on my part. my other padded cases seem to close and I don't want to have to sit on this one to close it.

This pretty much sums up how I do it.

I find foam dulls knives surprisingly quickly.

Haven't watched the video yet, but I like using this for cutouts in hardcase foams:

Blades are long, straight and sharp. Also cheap.

Something like that can also be picked up at Home Depot in the paint dept.: https://www.homedepot.com/p/OLFA-180...5001/205823671

Much like Dontshakepandas link, an electric carving knife is key.

(Forgive me...I'm dumb and don't know how to imbed a video)

That is what I'll be doing with my Pelican gun case. Hope that helps.

Bought one of the Home Depot knives and cut out the foam, worked fine. Thanks for the hints.
