    Chickens you've never heard of.

I was talking to my neighbor today about his new chicken breed which dine at my bird feeder. I was curious because we had the standard breeds when I was a kid. I was also curious because these aren't anything like the chickens I know. These chickens can fly. I mean fly like pheasants. I used to hunt wild pheasants so I know they're flight ability. He told me they were Jungle Fowl. His FIL who is Filipino advised him that he needed Jungle Fowl because just plain chickens are coyote, eagle, owl and raccoon fodder where I live. Especially free range chickens. I did a search and these are actually related to pheasants and where domestic chickens originated 8000 years ago. I guess they're common in Asia.

Yes, I knew chickens originated from Jungle Fowl in Asia but have never heard of anyone keeping them domestically. Very interesting. Where did he source them?

Somebody local here on Camano Island. I guess someone else figured out the combination. We have some real problems with avian predator's. I see eagles every day in my air space... probably looking for my neighbors chickens,

"Chickens You've Never Heard Of" would be a good name for a band.

I think they are. My neighbor primarily raises chickens for meat and eggs. They seem fairly domesticated as I feed them oats. Certainly not your ordinary chicken but not game birds either. They recognize my presents and associate me with food.

Did your neighbor get them from a Montana sheep farmer?

He did grow up in Montana but I think he's realized the draw backs of actually living in Montana and Wyomin. But the fishing is good and you'll always be able to find lamb chops in your local market.
