AAR - Pepperoni and Greybeard Collaborative Pistol Class - DeKalb, IL - July 27&28 20

It was the best of times, it was...

    Nah, it was all good.

This was a great class. I've had the good fortune to attend a lot of classes over the past decade. As a result of the that, I've refined what it is that I'm looking to get out of a class. A lot of classes have the tendency to become very much like a supervised range practice session. Not a bad thing, but at this point in my shooting skills development, I more interested in what I can do to help my skills progress once the class ends.

To effectively do that you really need to get into the why of certain techniques. Les and Matt did that very well.

Listening to the way that Matt and Les analyze things is one of the most instructive parts of the class. They did a great job of breaking down complex events into their individual parts, which allows you to really work on the foundational components in isolation.

A light bulb moment for me was really looking at what really made up the time in a stage. How much time in a stage is movement, how much is shooting, how much is reloading, etc... I hadn't realized before that on a stage, a majority of the time of a stage could be movement and that focus on how you move from shooting position to another could really have an effect on your stage time. Are you moving unnecessarily? For example, instead of moving into a shooting position and arriving in a squatting position, standing up into a traditional range practice shooting position, then lowering your body to make movement to the next position. You could save time by moving into that shooting position, shooting from a slight squat position, and then be ready to move again without wasting time standing up and squatting down again.

I hope that this is the first of many classes that Les and Matt give in ILLINOIS (we still miss you Les). If they do, I'll definitely be signing up for it again. I have no doubt that I would continue to benefit from taking this class again.

A brief bit of gear porn. I ran my Beretta 92 Elite LTT for the first time. I’ve been shooting primarily Glocks for the past several years. After listening to Les and Ernest Langdon talk about what they like about the 92s, I thought it might be time to really give the DA/SA thing a try. Also, I checked, and getting into 92s is much cheaper than sports cars for a midlife crisis.

I dry-fired the gun a bit before the class, but only really focused on DA trigger. That first live fire shot was pretty funny, because my finger was wondering where the hell that trigger went. By the end of the class I felt like I had gotten very comfortable with the gun. I’m looking forward to shooting it in competition.

I took the opportunity to shoot it from both my USPSA rig and my Keepers Concealment holster. Both ran great, and I enjoyed getting to hear some of Les’s thoughts on running a 92 from AIWB
