Thread: Visit to Shiloh Rifles in Big Timber, MT

  1. #11
This thread reminded me my better half promised to buy me a "Quigley" Sharps on our 25th wedding anniversary (which passed two weeks ago). No Sharps for me yet - maybe our 50th?

Something about buying a new house that immediately needed a new HVAC system probably had something to do with it...

    Shumba,

Well you can tease us with more pics but also give us the rundown on what all is on it, caliber, sights, etc.

Also let us know how she performs! That boom stick is begging to shoot at the Quigley Buffalo Match...........

Both are .45-70. Sights on the Hartford are MVA and the No.1 has MVA rear and Axtell front.
I was sorry to see Axtell close since I prefer their front sight.
I shoot black powder in the Hartford and smokeless in the Sporter.
Accuracy is great in both. I will find some pictures to post.
Sporter has a checkered steel shotgun butt and the other has a period correct military butt.
The leather pads are from Lion Country Supply near State College PA. My arthritic shoulders canít stand the steel.
The Hartford shoots 540 Creedmoor bullets backed by 64 grains of Swiss 1.5.
The Sporter load is the 330 grain Gould hollowpoint in front of 42 grains of H4198 for 1850 FPS.
No leading with the BP load, some streaks near the muzzle with the smokeless.

These were new Starline cases hence the lighter powder charge

These groups are from the Hartford model.
There are actually 6 shots on the lower photo.
    I canít count😀

I currently dont have a nice Sharps rifle but am working towards either a C Sharps or Pedersoli model in the future. Right now I shoot the officers Trapdoor Springfield Carbines as shown on the picture above. Using the original US Cavalry load of 55gr (Old Eynsford) FFg and a 405gr RNFP cast 20:1 and lubed with SPG. Remington Cases, WLRP. They are a "blast" to shoot using that original carbine load....

Which front sight insert are y'all using?

    Wyoming,
I use a post insert from the MVA cards that subtends the width of the targets I posted.
The Sporter has a small pinhead sight that screws into the bottom of the sight from below. It came with two different
ones and is a replica of an original Sharps sight. It is nitre blued.
I use a Hadley eye disk for hunting so I can adapt to ambient light.

Wow. Beautiful guns. They are truly the ďN framesĒ of rifles.

I looked a few years back when the long range rifle bug bit me hard. It looks to be an outstanding way to mix old school equipment and new school tech.

Iím tickled to hear Lion Country is still in business. Years back, they were my ďgo toĒ place for all things dog and upland bird hunting. Really great folks...
Working diligently to enlarge my group size.
