    Week 331: Twenty Hits (3x5)

    Week 331: Twenty Hits (3x5)

Results may be posted until August 26th, 2019.

    Designed by: DocGKR
    Range: 7 yards
    Target: 3x5 card
    Start position: See below
    Rounds fired: Varies

Draw and fire two rounds to the 3x5. If drawing is not allowed at your range, start at ready instead. Record your time and the number of hits you got. Repeat until you've hit the target a total of twenty times, recording the time for each run. Keep running the drill (two shots at a time) until you've scored twenty total hits. This may take as few as ten runs or it could require many, many more depending on your accuracy.

The total time of all the runs you needed to get twenty hits is your score. If you do it in ten tries, your score is your time for those ten. If you need twenty tries to get the hits, your score is the time for all twenty. Your time gets added whether you got 2, 1, or 0 hits for a particular try.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Start position (concealed, retention holster, open/range holster, ready position)
Number of shots it took to get a total of 20 hits
    Total combined time
    Anything you noticed

    Final score, 53.91
Took 12 iterations: missed on 1st, 8th, 11th, and last.

Avg. time per run, 4.49. 3.44 fastest, 3rd run.

I decided to only hurry getting the gun out and up, remembering Wyatt Earp's mantra "Speed is fine, but accuracy is final." And of course still had misses!

    @DocGKR this is cool. Thanks!

I shot this twice, first with the 43X and then with my CQB.

    43X shot from OWB JMCK
Required 34 shots for a total time of 44.43 sec
    * Had two runs with 0 hits. OTOH only one really badly shanked miss.

CQB shot from a leather IWB @ 3:30. Really noticed the drag of leather and felt slow in the draw.
Required 26 shots for a total time of 38.31 sec

    * No runs without at least one hit. Misses were close; no terribly shanked miss.

I really dig this one for the reps and measurements. Will do this regularly.

    I like this one.
Ran it twice (actually once and 3/4s)

    Dan Wesson Specialist 9mm
IDPA gear: open top holster from open front concealment
    Hands relaxed at sides
    Strings: 14
    Total shots: 28
    Time: 39.22 seconds

    Observations
First time shooting a 1911 in a few weeks. My index was off with the front sight pushed far left in the notch for most of the strings. Felt like it was taking forever to get the first shot off, but I was not too upset at the overall times from a "match mode" perspective. It was good feed back to have that I do not need to rush my shots as much as I sometimes think I do. Towards the end of the drill I started having some self induced anxiety around 15 hits and had to channel my inner Lanny Basham and get back to process focused. On string 6 I topped the gun off with 11 rounds and had a fail to feed after the first shot. Which has been an issue with new magazines for this gun.

While getting ammo I found exactly 20 rounds of .45 and decided to shoot that up.

    Kimber TLE II .45ACP
    IDPA gear
    Hands relaxed at sides
    Strings: 10
    Total shots: 14 hits/20
    TIME: 25.46 seconds (INCOMPLETE)

First time with .45 in over 2 years. The first string it was clear I have been cheating some of my grip and recoil control with the softer guns, but it did not take long to fix. The shot way low on the body was my second shot. I was pleased to see that my times were generally similar to the 9mm. The biggest surprise was the split times had little difference. I did drop more rounds in fewer strings, and should have tried to go for 100% accuracy, but this was a good time for me to see if I could control the heavier caliber at a more realistic speed and not turn this drill into 7 yard slow fire.

I like this a lot. For future attempts I'm going to use 25 seconds as a pass/pail.

I decided to run this with my carry gun after a quick warm up. I used two 3x5s, one for the first 5 strings then one for the last 6 strings. That helps me keep track of hits/ misses. In the beginning i had some issues that i assume are from lack of dry practice or developed in lazy dry practice. The first the runs, my hits were scattered and i realized i didn't have a solid grip with my support hand. After that i tightened my grip and my his tightened accordingly, and in turn allowed my sights to settle quicker and faster hits commenced. Also i was initially spreading my fingers when going for my master grip in the holster which caused all kinds of odd foibles. I fixed both of those things on the first three strings and all was good after. Halfway through i noticed i was eye sprinting horribly. I put conscious effort into eliminating that and my times fell. Funny how a bit of self diagnosis combined with warmup took me from 2.6x ish down into the 2.3x range with a 2.19 best clean run once i unf'd myself.

A combination of being warmed up, a bigger gun in an easier to draw from holster, and stock trs which is a touch lighter than my carry gun with Apex trs led to slightly faster times, though in the end i got in my head and lacked the consistency to finish strong - leading to two extra strings adding 4.81 seconds to my total. Just under 2 seconds slower overall than with my carry gun. On the 10th string i had an awful case of no prep trigger slapping which pulled both shots low for a big goose egg.

@backtrail540 Looking at your times and knowing what mine were really verifies that only hits matter. Our 26 shot/29 second runs are nearly identical. When you shot slower and made consistent hits you had a better overall time.

My issue was overdriving the recoil management and putting multiple misses JUST under the card. I'm going to shoot it again next range trip. Also might use some steel and shoot a 50 yard version for shits and giggles.
