    Spoiler (highlight to read):

    Space Force!

    Scientology Space Force.

The UAV thing fits with Ed Harris’ “extinction” comment. And damn... Ed is looking rough.

Regardless of anything else in Maverick's back story according to the Top Gun Timeline he would have been on active duty for over 40 years by the time the sequel comes out. Even if his service record was exemplary he would have been forced into retirement at 30 years. It's possible he could have gone Navy Reserve but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be on flight status.

Lt. Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell :”What’s this?”

Ship CO: “well, they WERE going to be orders for Miramar. But since you disobeyed a direct order to land your plane, they’re orders to MCAS El Toro instead. Enjoy your bright future as a Navy personnel officer, Ensign Mitchell”

This looks rad and I’m willing to suspend disbelief about his naval longevity because fuck yeah fighter planes!
This. I played through several Ace Combat games despite its blatant unrealism but I thoroughly enjoyed it because it was fun as fuck. Hollywood is lacking in movies about fighter jets nowadays so why not?
