Question about external boxes on patrol cars

When I visit my elderly father, we watch a bunch of the Live PD type shows. We wonder about the boxes seen on the trunk lids of some of the patrol cars.

White boxes, very roughly 5 by 5 by 8 inches, with cables coming out of the forward side. These are in a row across the trunk lid, sometimes 3 boxes, sometimes 4 boxes. I did see one car with these boxes lined up on the roof, just above the rear window.

My Google search was an utter failure, but I did try.

    So what are these?

Probably automated license plate readers (google ALPR).

And I had a better Google day, finding the answer.

It is equipment added to patrol cars to support the Live PD broadcasts. Here is a link to the vendor who makes the gear:

We had boxes that looked like that on the trunks of our cars sometimes...but it was just take-out orders that guys forgot and left there before driving off.
