Despite my screen name, a hold over from BBS days, I have lived in S. NV since 2004.
Red Rock Canyon and Lake Meade Recreation Area are amazing, however, this time of the year, I recommend the Mt. Charleston area for hikes & outdoor activities. (I lead hikes for several groups on Meetup).
For car trips, Red Rock Canyon and Lake Meade are fine.
