How come the detent is not locking in automatically?

I got the ball detent lock up on the m69 and the m66 confused.

Like I said above the ball detent is designed to provide constant pressure to keep the crane and cylinder pushed towards the frame. This is done by the detent pushing on the side of the notch in the crane inside of staying in the center of the notch.

With the cylinder open does the ball detent move freely, back and forth in the frame?

Is there a gap between the crane and the frame when the cylinder is closed?

If there is a gap between the crane and the frame when you push the gap closed does the ball detent move fully forward?

Just to be sure I’m thinking about the same ball detent your m66 is the same as the pictures in the link?

Whoa. I had never noticed they used a different ball lock (I have a 69, but have never handled a new 66). And now I'm totally confused - why would they use two such different designs on two such similar guns?

I have S&W revolvers from the 50’s and 70’s, and they’re great. I bought a brand new 2018 Classic 36 last year, and the trigger was sometimes really gritty. I took the sideplate off, and blew out several metal shavings with a can of compressed air. It’s been smooth ever since.

That is why "box to range" is okay for other people's guns, if they're okay with it, but not for mine.

My guess is it has something to do with the two piece barrel, but I really don’t know.

After some googling, my guess is that it's not a M66/M69 thing, it's a when manufactured thing. For example, halfway down this page has a pic of both side by side with what I was thinking was the 'M66' frame mounted ball detent:

    https://ontargetmagazine.com/2018/05...ombat-magnums/

I also found pics of the 500 with that style, but my M69 has the other type (detent is in the crane). And post #14 here:

    https://thefiringline.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=542727

has what is supposed to be an M66, with what must be one of the in-crane ones (anyway, it doesn't have the style in the previous article).

Another 66 with the crane mounted one (you can just see the notch in the underlug when zoomed on the barrel closeup ... and sorry, annoying popups):

And another 69 with the frame mounted version (several pics down):

For whatever reason it looks like they changed the design. I dunno which version was first.

The ball detent I posted from lucky gunner and the on Target magazine is the newest design and I didn’t know the m69 now had the newer design.
