It is some seriously sloppy work.
Note that Kellerman did not even examine defensive uses of a firearm where the assailant wasn't killed. In other words, if someone defended themselves with a firearm and did not kill the person attacking them, it didn't factor into his results. We know for a fact that the vast majority of defensive uses of firearms do not result in the death of criminal assailants...or even of shots fired.
It is also worthwhile to note that one of the places Kellerman gathered statistics from was Memphis...a place a few people on PF can tell you all about.
