    Big cat:

“I’m glassing and laying clear across this drainage was a cat and a big cat,” he said. “It struck me as huge. Laying there like your normal house cat.”

Reed, who had his Tikka .300 mag rifle with him, went to the ground and sighted in on the tom. He estimated the shot was between 300 and 350 yards.

Edited to add: looks like a very good shot, judging by the pelt photo.

Here is a rough one -- nine year old girl attacked by a cougar in Northeastern Washington. She's alive, but apparently was in the ICU, and is still in the hospital.

Lily, along with two other children, was playing hide-and-seek in the woods a short distance from the camp buildings. Lily jumped out to surprise her friends when the cougar suddenly attacked.

“We are extremely thankful for this little girl’s resiliency and we're impressed with her spunk, in the face of this unfortunate encounter,” said Capt. Mike Sprecher of the WDFW Police. “It happened fast and we are thankful that the adults at the camp responded so quickly.”

The young male cougar was killed at the scene. Tests completed over the weekend showed the animal did not have rabies. WDFW officers were at the camp throughout the weekend combing through the scene to understand how the events unfolded.

Awful story. I can't imagine how I would feel if that was one of my girls. I hope she recovers fully.

The standard response from the authorities is disappointing:
"Cougar attacks on humans are rare. There have been two fatal attacks on humans in Washington state and, prior to this incident, 19 that resulted in injuries to humans in the past 100 years. While they don’t happen often, cougar attacks can be serious.

“Wild animals don’t care to be around humans any more than we want to have close encounters with them,” added Capt. Sprecher."

For fuck sake. Cougars and bears are predators. They hunt humans--especially smaller ones. Yes it's uncommon, but it's important to be aware that predatory attacks happen every year.

    Away, away, away, down.......
Chef was right man...don’t get out of the boat. Also note that lady has her back turned when the tiger grabs her.

    ETA:

I would also stay the fuck off of Indian safari rides in open top jeeps.

Friend of mine was a comparative psychologist who worked for zoos. She consulted on a case where a family was driving around in animal part with the windows open. A cheetah dove in the back, grabbed the kid and went out the other window. Didn't go well. She also told me of a zoo that had a moat to keep the tigers in with a small fence on the visitor side. Asked for her opinion of the layout (might misremember the figures), she said - Well, the moat is 15 feet. Tigers can leap 20 feet and I am out of here. Full of stories of nasty elephants who would lay in wait for keepers, etc.

Once went out a night in the TX Hill Country to lure supposedly a mountain lion with a wounded rabbit call. Given the tactical buffoonery of the group as what to do if we saw a lion - NEVER AGAIN.
