Barr appoints special prosecutor to investigate Russia probe origins

Attorney General William Barr has appointed a U.S. attorney to examine the origins of the Russia investigation and determine if intelligence collection involving the Trump campaign was “lawful and appropriate,” a person familiar with the issue told The Associated Press on Monday.

Barr appointed John Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut, to conduct the inquiry, the person said. The person could not discuss the matter publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Durham’s appointment comes about a month after Barr told members of Congress he believed “spying did occur” on the Trump campaign in 2016. He later said he didn’t mean anything pejorative and was gathering a team to look into the origins of the special counsel’s investigation.

    More bread and Circuses.

When HRC is issued an orange pantsuit, I may start believing that we only have one set of laws again. Maybe.

As Fed's on this site have mentioned, FISA warrants are pretty thorough and formal affairs. Since that, other reading around I've done has just put an exclamation point on that what with teams of specialists working on them. So yeah, it's pretty unlikely IMO to the less than "properly predicated".

I've also downloaded the PDF of the Steele Dossier and have a paperback copy delivering from Amazon. Cursory reading so far is pretty interesting. Several findings in the Mueller report were "predicted" in various "chapters" of the Steele dossier. Concealed real estate deals in Russia, Russian hacking of the DNC with Wikileaks used for deniable distribution, Manafort's weird shenanigans with Russians, the anti-Clinton propaganda efforts for example. It's kind of head scratching vs the common media narrative of the dossier.

It's almost like the same guy was leaking to two different organizations.

Pretty much. The whole "let's leak specific info to a new org, let the news org write an article about said info, and then use the article to justify a warrant" might be a teensy bit illegal.

Yes! Deep State!!! But Deep State was so inept it failed to leak the existence of the Russia investigation in 2016 when it might have had electoral impact. That's kinda where it all falls down.

But it's all great reading. DoJ IG investigation into Clinton's email investigation was a good read. Mueller report is a great read. New IG report on the same topic as this new investigation is pending. Good stuff!

    This country has become lamentable.
There's nothing civil about this war.
